Cast and a short look at the characters

Wallace Chung as Chu Bei Jie

As the famous general Chu Bei Jie, Wallace Chung gives a truly strong performance. He plays a character who at first glance seems unshakeable, strategically brilliant and devoted to his country, but at the same time deeply human and emotionally vulnerable. Reason and passion, authority and tenderness often mix in his gaze, and it's exactly this inner duality that gives his performance so much power. I read somewhere that his acting in this series was praised not only for his natural charisma, but also for how realistically he portrayed a man torn between duty and love.

    Angelababy as Bai Pingting

Here Angelababy steps out of the typical "pretty face" box and shows that she can bring strength, intelligence and elegance to the screen all at once. Bai Pingting isn't a typical romance heroine. She's a woman who thinks strategically, doesn't act on impulse, and whose feelings have real depth. Angelababy handles the shifts between a cold tactician and a vulnerable woman with great subtlety. Although she's sometimes criticised for a certain reserve in her acting, here she showed that with good direction she can create a strong and convincing character.

    Sun Yizhou as He Xia

He Xia is a tragic, complicated character, and maybe that's exactly why he's so interesting. A man full of ideals gradually turns into someone consumed by a desire for revenge. Sun Yizhou handles his transformation without pathos, very humanly instead, and in the moments when He Xia doubts or suffers, he comes across as almost melancholic. He brings a moral grey zone into the story.

    Gan Tingting as Yao Tian

Princess Yao Tian is the quiet strength of this story. She isn't loud, but her decisions carry weight. Gan Tingting gave her a calm dignity along with sensitivity. She isn't just a supporting female character. Her role has a real influence on events and on Pingting, and that's exactly what makes her an interesting counterpart.

    What is it about?

Against the backdrop of a world torn apart by war, a deeply human story unfolds. Bai Pingting, once a mere servant, thanks to her intelligence and her talent for strategic thinking, ends up in a position where she influences the course of the wars between four powerful states. After the fall of the master she served faithfully, she flees in disguise and by chance meets a man from her past again, Chu Bei Jie, now a famous general and hero of one of the rival states.

Their relationship isn't simple. Chu Bei Jie is engaged, loyal to his kingdom and determined to protect his people. Pingting, on the other hand, carries responsibility for what's left of her past and is determined to survive in a world where feelings mean weakness. Their love becomes dangerous, not just for the two of them, but for the whole political system around them.

The series isn't afraid to show what love looks like when it isn't ideal. How much it hurts when duty, the past, loyalty and politics stand in its way. And how incredibly strong it can be when it holds on anyway. The relationship between Chu Bei Jie and Pingting is no romantic fairy tale. It's a slow burn between two strong individuals who respect each other and make each other stronger.

The story offers great battles and bloody decisions, but also scenes full of silence, where a single look says more than a whole army of words. It's a series about everything you have to sacrifice to keep not only your honour, but yourself.

    My verdict

General and I isn't just another historical romance. It's a story about the balance between reason and feeling, duty and desire, tactics and the heart. Both leads gave it everything. Wallace Chung and Angelababy both managed to break free from their usual roles and created a couple you won't forget easily. Their chemistry is gentle, intimate and natural, never showy, but all the stronger for it.

Wallace Chung won me over already in My Sunshine, where he played a deeply devoted man with quiet intensity, and here he builds on that with even more inner strength. I knew Angelababy more from things like Love O2O or her modelling past, but in General and I she shows real growth as an actress. She proves that beauty isn't everything and that she can carry a complex role.

I recommend this series to everyone who isn't looking just for romance, but also for depth, tension and characters with a real inner life. And to everyone who wants to see what love can look like when it isn't simple, but is real.
